DOMAIN NAMES
Purchasing a Domain Name
One of the first things you need to do is obtain a domain name for
your web site. Use the Network Solutions web site to search for
the domain name database for availability of your desired name and to
purchase the name.
If you already have a domain name or prefer to register through a
domain registrar other than Network Solutions, no problem, I can still
develop and/or host your site.
One of the other top domain registrars is
GoDaddy.
HINT: If you want to aid in the search engine optimization of
your web site, incorporate your most important/popular keyword into your
domain name.
Too keep your marketing literature consistent, it's a good idea to have
a domain name which matches your company name, so you may want to consider
purchasing more than one domain name. One with the name of your
company for print purposes and another domain name which contains your
keyword.
Of course, if this is a new business and you haven't established a
company name yet, then you should consider your domain name when deciding
on your company name. Ideally, your company name will include your
keyword, then you can simply use the same name for your web site domain
name. HOWEVER, be sure to search the domain name database and purchase the
domain before you use that name as your official company name.
Pointing Your Domain Name to Your Web Site Space
If you are not going to be the one who does the set-up so your domain
name points to your web site space at your web host, then after you have
purchased your domain name through Network Solutions, you need to
"Add a Technical Contact" to your Network Solutions account so
someone else can do this for you. Follow the steps below to add a
technical contact to a domain name in your Network Solutions
account. Before you can do this, you'll need to know the Network
Solutions User ID (or email address) of the person you are going to
designate as a Technical Contact.
Instructions to Add a Technical Contact:
- Log in to your Network Solutions account
- Select "Edit Account Contacts" from the links on the left
- Select the radio button next to your account listing and click on the blue "Edit Contacts" button
- In the "Account Contacts" section of the screen, click on the link to "Add new Account Administrative or Technical Contact"
- On the "Edit Account Contacts" screen, select the radio button next to "Network
Solution User ID" and enter the new contact's User ID in the empty box
OR select the Email radio button and enter his/her email address

Domain Name Extensions:
Extensions are categories of Internet domain names. Some of the
most popular ones are:
.com represents the word "commercial," and is the most
widely used extension in the world. Most businesses prefer a .com domain
name because it is a highly recognized symbol for having a business
presence on the Internet.
.org represents the word "organization," and is
primarily used by non-profits groups or trade associations, but is
commonly used by businesses who can't get the name they want using the
.com extension.
.biz is used for small business web sites.
.bz was originally designated as the country code for Belize,
but is now commonly used by small business who can't get the name they
want using the .biz extension. It is unrestricted and may be registered by
anyone, from any country.
.net represents the word "network," and is most
commonly used by Internet service providers, web-hosting companies or
other businesses that are directly involved in the infrastructure of the
Internet.
.info is for credible resource web sites and signifies a
"resource" web site. It's the most popular extension beyond
.com, .net and .org.
.us is for American web sites and is the newest extension. It
has the largest amount of available names in inventory.
.tv is for rich content/multi-media web sites, commonly used within
the entertainment or media industry.
.ws was originally designated as the country code for Western
Samoa, but is now commonly used as an acronym for "web sites."
It is unrestricted and may be registered by anyone, from any country.
Extensions for other countries also exist, but are not listed here.
